LSST Interdisciplinary Network for Collaboration and Computing

Job Opportunities

The LINCC frameworks team is expanding!  Below are job opportunities associated with the LINCC frameworks initiative; those hired would join our team.  Stay tuned for more - and sign up for the LINCC mailing list to be notified of new opportunities.

  • Research scientist positions: We are seeking astronomers with an interest in analysis software development for LSST, especially in the areas of solar system science, photometric redshifts, and light curve analysis, to take on roles as leaders or participants in developing the LINCC frameworks and working with the broader community on integration of tools and early science analyses.  Job ads are here for Carnegie Mellon University, and here for University of Pittsburgh.

  • Postdoctoral fellowships: Besides the above LINCC-specific opportunities, those seeking postdoctoral positions in astrophysics are encouraged to apply to independent postdoctoral fellowships at CMU and at UW, which will permit successful candidates to drive their research programs independently while interacting with members of the LINCC Frameworks team.

  • Software engineering positions: The LINCC frameworks team is looking for a software engineer to join the team at Carnegie Mellon University and work at the intersection of state of the art computer science and cutting edge astrophysics. The engineers will design and build an analysis framework run on the cloud or high-performance computing (HPC) systems that can store, search, analyze and annotate data of the volume and complexity of the LSST data. This framework will provide an interface for the astronomical community to run real time and batch analyses (e.g. to search for one-in-a-million events in continuous streams of data). Engineers will work with astronomers and scientists to integrate their work into these scalable frameworks. Development will incorporate software best practices such as peer code review, to produce secure, testable, maintainable, and extensible code. Candidates can apply here.
