The LSST Corporation’s Enabling Science Committee is soliciting proposals to help prepare for LSST science.  Information about the Committee’s activities in support of LSSTC’s mission of Investing in Discovery with Rubin Observatory / LSST can be found at https://www.lsstcorporation.org/enabling-science

GRADUATE or PhD STUDENT, POSTDOC, or RESEARCH SCIENTIST
This Call is open to proposals to support a graduate student, postdoc, or research scientist - salary, tuition, stipend, and direct costs towards travel, publications, etc.  The budget available for the 2022 LSSTC – Wasabi Call for Proposals is $25,000.

Proposal must be led by a single LSSTC Member Institution (100% funding to that institution). The proposal must be submitted by the Institutional Representative, or another designated PI.

The proposal should indicate from which LSSTC Science Collaboration (SC) an endorsement will be sought if selected to move forward with a full proposal. (Ideally, the Institutional Representative will have discussed the proposal with the SC before submitting the pre-proposal.)

GENERAL GUIDANCE
The primary criterion by which all proposals will be evaluated is the potential impact of the activity on the preparation of any part of the user community for science with LSST data. This preparation can take any form, from preparatory analysis and simulations to the development of techniques. Proposals that are aligned with the science-preparation tasks of the LSST Science Collaborations are particularly encouraged, as are proposals that include participation of members of the LSST Project. Proposals should include an impact statement; priority will be given to proposals that can demonstrate the potential for impact (e.g., relative to size and operating budget of the institution to benefit small institutions, relative to the ability to leverage future grants, and/or relative to the ability to provide a framework for next-step activities of the LSST Science Collaborations).

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION
Please structure your proposal according to the format outlined in the 2022 Enabling Science Proposal template  and submit a PDF version to lsstc@lsst.org (subject line: 2022 Enabling Science – Wasabi Proposal from [name of institution]) no later than 11:59pm on 18 March 2022 (MST/PDT). Pre-proposals should not exceed one page in length, including a science justification and a brief budget.

The detailed parameters of this Call are as follows:

• $25K in funds to support a graduate or PhD student, Postdoc, or research scientist.
• Budget can include salary, tuition, stipend, and direct costs towards travel, publications, etc.
• The Enabling Science Committee will down-select preproposals by 1 April 2022 and request full proposal
• Full proposals (two page max) will be due by 11:59pm MDT on 15 April 2022.

Proposals will be reviewed by a panel appointed by the LSSTC Board of Directors, with a goal of informing proposers by April 29. 2022  Information about the expectations for awardees can be found at this link.  No indirect fees may be charged to this award. The host institution's normal fund administration fee may be charged in order to cover a portion of the costs involved in actual expenses administering the grant. It is expected that this rate will not exceed ~10-15% of the grant award. Questions about this policy should be addressed to LSSTC (email to lsstc@lsst.org).

We look forward to receiving your proposals in response to this Call.

Gordon Richards, Chair, Enabling Science Committee, LSSTC
Pat Eliason, Chief Executive Officer, LSSTC
