LSST Corporation Call for Proposals
2023 Rubin PCW Student Program

 

LSSTC is supporting 18 undergraduate students to attend the 2023 Rubin LSST Project and Community workshop and present their LSST-related research. This year’s PCW is at the Marriott University Park in Tucson, Arizona. students will arrive on Sunday, August 6, 2023 and depart Thursday, August 10, 2023.  Faculty advisors can submit proposals here by Friday, May 19, 2023 at 5 pm PDT.  Please submit one proposal per student.  Reach out to Beth Willman (bwillman@lsstc.org) with questions.

Undergraduates selected for this PCW program will participate in special programming that is designed to help them network among the Rubin LSST community, build a cohort among themselves, and develop professional skills.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Students must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at the time of this call for proposals.
  • Students must be from or working at an LSSTC Member Institution, or be from a small and/or underrepresented institution - for example students working with Rubin DP0 delegates from minority-serving institutions. 
  • Undergraduates must be working on LSST-specific research projects, and be able to present their work in a poster and one-slide pitch.

Selection criteria:

  • Satisfaction of the above criteria.
  • Representation of as many institutional members as possible in the student cohort.
     

If this program is oversubscribed these will be used to select among the applicants:

  • Participation by the student and/or advisor in a science collaboration
  • Diversifying participation in LSST, broadly defined 
     

Student programming is planned to include (details depending on the precise PCW schedule):

  • Special student group meals:  Sunday dinner, Monday breakfast, and Monday lunch
  • Mirror lab tour and NOIRLab machine shop tour, if they can be arranged.
  • One-slide student poster pitches, with a student poster session for all students.

What will be covered?

  • Registration fee for 3 days, including reception attendance, to be directly paid by LSSTC
  • Hotel accommodation for 4 nights, to be directly paid by LSSTC
  • Airfare, to be arranged and paid by LSSTC
  • Several group meals
  • A (taxable) stipend of $350 to cover additional meals and ground transportation

Support for childcare can separately be requested directly by attendees through our Pilot Childcare Program.  This support is made possible by the LSST Corporation and IceCube, and generously sponsored by the Heising-Simons Foundation.
